Moving wallpapers on Pixel and other Android phones

How to get a moving wallpaper on a Google Pixel or any Android phone without a built in video wallpaper setting, using a video wallpaper app and an MP4 loop.

Checked 7 October 2026

Pixel phones and most Android phones outside Samsung do not have a setting for video wallpapers. Android 16 added wallpaper Effects on Pixel (Cinematic, shapes and weather) that animate your own photos, but they do not play a video. For a true moving wallpaper you need a video wallpaper app.

Steps

  1. Download the Android video (MP4) from a wallpaper page.
  2. Install a video wallpaper app from Google Play. Pick one with good reviews that asks only for access to your videos, and avoid apps that ask for contacts, location or accessibility access.
  3. In the app, choose the Wallmill MP4 and set it for the Home Screen, Lock Screen or both.
  4. Android shows a live wallpaper preview. Tap Set wallpaper.

Battery

A video wallpaper uses a little more battery than a still, mostly while the screen is on. The darker Wallmill loops (Black Ripple, Slow Starfield, Midnight Silk) are the gentlest on OLED screens.

If your phone is a Samsung, you do not need an app for the Lock Screen: see the Samsung guide.
